Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 75 (January 6, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Artillery) Frank Y. Sasaki (ASN: 0-5800032), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Sasaki distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 November 1966 while serving as aircraft commander of an armed helicopter supporting a supply convoy under attack near An Loc. When he arrived the convoy was pinned down by intense fire from a large Viet Cong force. Captain Sasaki immediately began low level attacks on the hostile trenches and fortifications throughout the area. Since the insurgents had closed to within 20 meters of the convoy, he was forced to fly directly over their positions to place his fire without endangering the friendly force. With complete disregard for his personal safety while receiving intense hostile fire, Captain Sasaki pressed his attack until his ammunition was expended. His aggressiveness saved lives and equipment in the convoy and enabled the troops to regroup and repulse the Viet Cong. Captain Sasaki’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
