The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class William A. Sale, Jr. (ASN: US-54901650), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 10 June 1968 while serving as a medic attached to Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Troop C was conducting a reconnaissance in force mission in the vicinity of Phuoc Vinh when suddenly one of the lead vehicles detonated an antitank mine, causing the assault vehicle to overturn and burst into flames. Following the explosion of the mine, a hostile force directed an intense volume of small arms and automatic weapons fire at the armored column. Specialist Sale, totally disregarding his own safety in the face of the hostile fire, dismounted his vehicle and rushed to the disabled armored cavalry assault vehicle. Upon reaching the burning vehicle, he noticed that there were wounded men trapped inside. Again, disregarding his own safety, Specialist Sale entered and extracted the wounded personnel. He then administered first aid and prepared the wounded troopers for evacuation. Specialist Sale’s unwavering devotion to duty, deep concern for the welfare of his comrades in arms and profound personal courage while under hostile fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
