The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Allen T. Russell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Russell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 1 March 1970 while serving as a vehicle commander with Troop F, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, lead elements of Troop F were suddenly engaged by an estimated two squads of enemy soldiers. In the initial moments of contact one of the troop’s members was seriously wounded by enemy fire. Immediately, and with complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Russell maneuvered toward his fallen comrade. After administering first aid to the wounded soldier, he proceeded to move him to a safer area. Although constantly exposed to intense hostile fire, he carried the man a distance of 100 meters. His actions were directly responsible for saving the soldier’s life. Specialist Fourth Class Russell’s gallantry in actions was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
