The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant Charles S. Rousek, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 22 June 1970 while serving as Aircraft Commander with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, as Company M was being engaged by an enemy force of unknown size, Lieutenant Rousek was flying over the contact area in his helicopter. Disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Rousek made numerous low level passes over the enemy locations, placing highly accurate suppressive fire upon the hostile force. When all of his ammunition was expended, Lieutenant Rousek returned to his base to refuel and re-supply his helicopter with ammunition. Upon returning to the contact scene, Lieutenant Rousek escorted medical evacuation helicopter which was going in to remove several wounded personnel. His expert flying ability and courageous acts contributed significantly to a complete rout of the enemy and the quick, efficient evacuation of casualties. First Lieutenant Rousek’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
