Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 2829 (July 3, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) James A. Rohrer, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 5 May 1970 while serving as a pilot with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Warrant Officer Rohrer was flying a convoy support mission for the 2d Squadron when he spotted enemy emplacements along the route. Flying again over the area to verify his observation, he received intense enemy ground fire. Warrant Officer Rohrer notified the convoy of the impending danger and then returned to estimate the size of the insurgent force. Again he received heavy fire from the enemy force. While engaging the enemy with return fire, Warrant Officer Rohrer moved to a higher altitude and began directing friendly fire upon the enemy. The Regimental Commander landed his craft during the contact and immediately received a deadly hail of fire which wounded several friendly soldiers. Warrant Officer Rohrer quickly landed his helicopter and assisted in placing the wounded men aboard. Then he flew to the nearest medical facility. Warrant Officer Rohrer’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
