Headquarters, 78th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 47 (May 6, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant James C. A. Farrell (ASN: 32356440), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment, 76th Infantry Division, in the vicinity of Orenhofen, Germany, on 5 March 1945. Sergeant Farrell left the comparative safety of the command post in order to ascertain the safety of his section which was billeted in a basement a block away. While crossing an intersection, he was fired upon from an enemy machine gun position in the street. With no substantial protection for himself, Sergeant Farrell remained, throwing hand grenades at the emplacement until it was silenced. He then fought to his section where he established a defensive position for that area. His gallant and courageous stand in the face of superior numbers exemplifies the highest traditions of the armed forces of the United States.
