The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Raymond J. Rausch (ASN: 36357562), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with Company H, *** Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division, on 9 November 1944, in the vicinity of Hannabois Woods, France. While Technical Sergeant Rausch’s platoon was participating in a Battalion attack on a powerful enemy fore in Hannabois Woods, his platoon leader was wounded and had to be evacuated. Taking command himself, Technical Sergeant Rausch was soon faced with the critical necessity of conducting a withdrawal over hilly, wooded terrain under vehement fire from German artillery and mortars. Technical Sergeant Rausch coolly directed a conspicuously well-organized withdrawal despite the enemy’s fierce attempt to destroy the platoon. Then, with adamant devotion to duty, this intrepid soldier guided aid men under scathing hostile fire to his platoon’s casualties. While assisting in their evacuation Technical Sergeant Rausch was himself wounded in both legs, but refused to leave his post until the last of the casualties had been removed to a covered position. Technical Sergeant Rausch’s distinctly heroic conduct reflects great credit upon him, and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
