The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James Williams, Jr. (ASN: 0-5351159), United States Army, for gallantry in action in the Republic of Vietnam on 23 May 1969. Lieutenant Williams distinguished himself while serving as a platoon leader in Company C, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. At 1545 hours on the cited date, elements of an unknown size enemy force attacked his platoon from its right flank in an attempt to overrun the position. Quickly assessing the enemy’s intention and firepower, he placed each of his men in a good firing position and pointed out targets for suppressive fire. Noticing enemy movement to his right, he immediately ran to the unprotected rear of his platoon and directed suppressive fire upon the enemy, simultaneously calling in artillery fire and air strikes upon the well-entrenched enemy forces, remaining completely unprotected from direct enemy fire. As he rallied his men for an attack on the hostile forces, an explosion near his position wounded him in the head, right arm, and leg. Disregarding these serious wounds and loss of blood, he led his men as they charged the enemy position, completely eliminating the enemy threat. Only after the position had been taken and medical evacuation aircraft had arrived did he allow his wounds to be treated. His courage, sound judgment, and dedication saved the lives of numerous friendly personnel. Lieutenant Williams’ personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
