The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George J. Zimmerman (ASN: 37070795), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, France, 14 July 1944. When his company was held down by hostile enemy fire from machine guns, small arms, mortar and artillery, Sergeant Zimmerman voluntarily guided tanks against the enemy positions, either by leading them on foot across mined fields, or from an exposed position on the outside of the tanks, and directed their fire against enemy machineguns, destroying the enemy positions and enabling his company to advance. The gallant action of this soldier resulted in the destruction by our troops of an enemy strong point and the seizing and holding of their objective. The extraordinary devotion to duty, gallantry in action and disregard for his own safety displayed by Sergeant Zimmerman on this occasion, was an inspiration to the men in his unit and reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
