The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant William F. Yorkshire (ASN: 33008227), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, Germany, on 28 March 1945. When a tank commander of his platoon was seriously wounded, Sergeant Yorkshire, with complete disregard for his own safety and under heavy enemy fire, dismounted his tank and evacuated the wounded man to a position where first aid could be administered. Later the same day, another tank of his platoon was set afire by enemy rocket fire and, again under enemy fire, he assisted in evacuating the five-man crew, despite the danger of imminent explosion. Sergeant Yorkshire was mortally wounded in action the following day. His intrepidity reflects high credit upon his character as a soldier.
