The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Frank Wycinski (ASN: 35622260), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of ****, France, on 26 September 1944. When the position of his heavy machine gun squad became untenable during the course of a strong enemy attack, Sergeant Wycinski, although wounded, covered the movement of his squad to an alternate position. He succeeded in silencing an enemy machine gun which opened fire upon his squad, and continued to fire at all enemy targets in the area, drawing enemy fire to his own position and permitting his squad to reach the alternate position safely. Despite his weakened condition, he then carried the heavy machine gun to the new position and reorganized his squad for a continuation of the fight before permitting himself to be evacuated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
