The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Johnnie T. Trout (ASN: 34645927), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action in the vicinity of ****, Germany, on 9 April 1945. After holding his position when others sought safety during an enemy artillery barrage followed by an infantry attack, Private Trout, a rifleman, inflicted casualties on the enemy by his counterfire, then exposed himself to heavy enemy fire to seek assistance. Upon his return, the enemy had occupied adjacent buildings and had pinned down his platoon. Again disregarding personal safety, he moved forward and silenced the enemy riflemen with grenades, enabling his platoon to resume the fight and halt the enemy attack. Private Trout’s gallantry in action reflects credit upon his character as a soldier.
