Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1559 (October 31, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Vincent M. Gresh (ASN: US-51824762), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 13 May 1968 while serving as a machine gunner on an armored cavalry assault vehicle assigned to Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Troop A was conducting a mounted sweep operation through a rice paddy when the unit was suddenly engaged by a North Vietnamese Army battalion using small arms, automatic weapons and antitank rocket fire. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Gresh dismounted his vehicle and, carrying an M-72 light antitank weapon, ran through the deadly hail of enemy small arms fire to a position from which he could bring fire on a well concealed enemy bunker. With a shot from his weapon, Specialist Gresh completely destroyed the bunker, enabling his troop to complete a withdrawal and regrouping actions. Specialist Four Gresh’s unwavering devotion to duty and great personal bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
