The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Field Artillery) Leonard E. Greenly (ASN: 0-2282648), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Greenly distinguished himself by valorous actions on 25 April 1967 while serving as Flight Leader of a Heavy Fire Team for Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. On this date, Captain Greenly received instructions to proceed with his team to a friendly command post that had engaged an estimated battalion of Viet Cong. Arriving at the contested area, Captain Greenly swooped low over the insurgent force, leading his men in a devastating attack upon the insurgents. Evading withering fire, he directed his door gunners to engage the enemy. At that moment, a burst of hostile fire destroyed the right armament system on Captain Greenly’s helicopter, greatly impairing the aircraft’s firepower. Instantly assessing the damage, Captain Greenly courageously elected to remain at the battle site and, utilizing the treetops for cover, let several firing passes until ammunition was nearly expended. Through his consummate skill, Captain Greenly forced the Viet Cong to break contact and they were subsequently routed. Captain Greenly’s outstanding flying ability, courage, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
