The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) John A. Kerr (ASN: 0-5321806), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty. Captain Kerr distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 28 September 1967 in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date while piloting an unarmed OH-23G Command and Control helicopter Captain Kerr made contact with a company size force of the 3rd North Vietnamese Army Regiment. Although units of the 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment were able to fix and surround a major portion of the hostile force several enemy soldiers manages to escape. Despite heavy enemy automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire Captain Kerr made several low passes over the fleeing enemy allowing his passenger to engage them with his personal weapon wounding one and driving the others back toward the armored vehicles. One lone enemy broke from the group and continued to flee. Captain Kerr made an extremely low pass of 20 feet over the insurgent forcing him to the ground. He held the enemy soldier in that position by hovering directly over him. The enemy soldier attempted to escape several times but in each case Captain Kerr’s flying skill in combination with the shots fired by his passenger forced the soldier into a prone position until ground forces arrived and captured him. Captain Kerr’s heroic actions and highly competent flying ability are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
