The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] John Andrew Morris (ASN: 0-1305814), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company M, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. On 26 October 1944, near ****, France, First Lieutenant Morris crept 200 yards under the fire of two enemy machine guns and four snipers, to establish an Observation Post. Reaching a point fifty yards from enemy positions, he adjusted mortar and artillery fire on German installations. For thirty minutes he was subjected to intense rifle fire, and a grenade which burst within six yards of him, while directing fire which forced the enemy armor to withdraw, allowing our troops to move forward. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
