The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Louis G. Jarvis (ASN: RA-52523943), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Jarvis distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 11 March 1967 while serving as a Vehicle Commander for Troop B, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment during Operation Junction City. Early in the afternoon Sergeant Jarvis’ unit was attacked by an estimate reinforced company of Viet Cong while moving in dense jungle. The enemy concealed in an elaborate trench and bunker system attacked with anti-tank rockets, recoilless rifles, automatic weapons and 3 violent waves of grenade wielding insurgents. Sergeant Jarvis immediately directed devastating fire upon the assailants with his .50 caliber machine gun effectively driving the hostile force back to their entrenched positions. At his time, the lead tank was hit with a recoilless rifle round wounding all crew members aboard. In complete disregard for personal safety Sergeant Jarvis leaped from his vehicle and dashed through a hail of enemy fire to the immobilized tank loading and firing an M-79 grenade launcher as he ran. Reaching the vehicle he directed a fierce base of fire upon the insurgents while aiding in the evacuation of the wounded. He then mounted the tank started the engine and drove it back into the perimeter. Sergeant Jarvis hastily recruited a tank crew and led a second assault upon the Viet Cong routing them, resulting in 39 enemy deaths and the capture of two printing presses and valuable documents. Staff Sergeant Jarvis’ heroic actions in close combat with a hostile force are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
