The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant George H. Nienhueser (ASN: 37613416), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action in the **** River Sector, France, on 1 August 1944. Sergeant Nienhueser led his squad to the summit of a stubbornly held hill near ****, then accompanied his platoon leader to the battalion observation post to secure the necessary support. En route, they encountered enemy machine gun fire, and attacked the machine gun, killing one German and dispersing the remainder of the crew. He continued to his objective, returned to the hill position with supporting troops, and assisted in the successful defenses of the hill against all enemy attacks. He then assisted in the evacuation of casualties to an aid station. The gallant actions of Sergeant Nienhueser reflect the highest credit upon his character as a soldier, and upon the military service.
