The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Michael S. Monkiewicz (ASN: 31103849), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, Germany, on 9 March 1945. When a building occupied by his unit received two direct hits during an enemy artillery and mortar barrage, Sergeant Monkiewicz, a platoon sergeant, although himself painfully wounded, refused immediate medical attention and made his way around the area making sure that the wounded men received prompt treatment. After assisting in carrying two of the more seriously wounded soldiers to safety, Sergeant Monkiewicz permitted his own wounds to be dressed but refused evacuation, stating that he preferred to remain with his unit inasmuch as an assault against strong enemy positions was imminent. His gallant actions served as an inspiration to all members of his platoon, and reflect the highest credit upon his character and training as a soldier.
