The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George W. Minshall (ASN: 0-1174077), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, France, 9 August 1944. Lieutenant Minshall was serving as liaison officer attached to the 3d Battalion, **** Infantry Regiment, and had his observation post well forward of the battalion operations post. He located the enemy artillery fire continually harassing troops, and in crossing fifty yards of open ground in order to call the fire direction center, he was struck by enemy artillery, and although mortally wounded, refused first aid or evacuation until he had first telephoned the fire mission to his artillery. He died as a result of his wounds, but his tenacity of purpose, and his disregard for personal safety in placing the successful accomplishment of his mission above the value of his life, reflect the highest credit upon Lieutenant Minshall and is in accord with the military traditions of the United States.
