The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Glenn E. Metcalf (ASN: 36580524), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, Germany, on 31 March 1945. After leading a raiding party across the **** Canal under enemy observation and fire, Sergeant Metcalf, a platoon guide, displayed aggressive and skillful leadership in directing the fire and movement of his men in clearing a group of fortified buildings, inflicting heavy casualties among the enemy defenders. By his outstanding performance of this hazardous mission, Sergeant Metcalf was largely responsible for relieving the pressure on an adjoining unit which had been pinned to position by enemy fire, and paved the way for other elements of his company to cross the canal and seize their objective that night. His dynamic leadership reflects high credit upon his character and training as a soldier.
