William Hoge graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1941. He retired in 1967 as a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel. His father by the same name was a General Officer in World War II, who had earned a Distinguished Service Cross and Silver Star in World War I, and earned two more Silver Stars in World War II.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) William Morris Hoge, Jr. (ASN: 0-23894), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery B, 7th Field Artillery Battalion, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Achen, Germany, on 18 September 1944. After being seriously wounded in action, Captain Hoge continued to direct fire on the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Hoge, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
