The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Theodore R. Holmes (ASN: 37260443), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, Germany, on 30 March 1945. When his company, riding tanks into a village, was fired upon by an enemy machine gun placed between two buildings, Sergeant Holmes located the enemy weapon, mounted his tank’s turret and while enemy bullets whistled about him, he manned the tank’s machine gun and killed the enemy machine gunner. The remainder of the enemy crew fled into an adjoining building, but Sergeant Holmes pursued them. Wounding two in a fire fight within the building, he took all prisoners. Sergeant Holmes’ courage, grim tenacity and disregard for personal safety are in accord with the military traditions of the United States.
