The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Billy L. Hunziker, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the all of duty on 13 April 1970 while serving as a pilot with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date as Warrant Officer Hunziker was flying the squadron command and control helicopter it suddenly began to receive intense enemy ground fire. Immediately he executed intricate maneuvers to avoid the enemy fire. After insuring that his craft and crew received no damages or injuries, Warrant Officer Hunziker positioned his helicopter so that the commander could call in artillery and aircraft upon the enemy positions. He then assisted the squadron commander in controlling the ground troops in their assault upon the enemy. Through his efforts the enemy force was completely routed. Warrant Officer Hunziker’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
