Headquarters, 35th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 16 (August 8, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Vaughn H. Davis (ASN: 37001866), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 134th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action on 15 July 1944 near ****, France. In an attack on Hill Number 122 during the operation against ****, Sergeant Davis’ squad was held down by enemy machine gun fire from an emplacement in a hedgerow to his front. Sergeant Davis, the squad leader, voluntarily and alone, and armed only with hand grenades, made his way under heavy fire through an open field to the enemy side of the hedgerow, where he threw hand grenades into the enemy emplacement, killing two of the enemy and silencing the machine gun, so that his squad was able to advance and accomplish its mission. The gallantry, tenacity of purpose, unselfish loyalty and disregard for personal safety of Sergeant Davis reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
