The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Terrence J. Reynolds, Jr. (MCSN: 274278), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty while serving with a machine gun platoon of Company D, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on the morning of 1 November 1942. During a Marine offensive west of the Matanikau River, Corporal Reynolds, when it became necessary for Company C to effect a temporary organizational withdrawal, picked up his light machine gun and ammunition belt, boldly rushed forward and fired from the hip at hostile troops until he had halted their attack. While still well forward of our lines, he was killed while thwarting another enemy rush. His courageous initiative and self-sacrificing devotion to duty permitted the consolidation of our lines necessary for subsequent action against the Japanese. He gallantly gave up his life in the service of his country.
