The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Edward D. Howard (ASN: 0-5240770), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in connection with military operations against a hostile force on 6 May 1968 while serving as Platoon Leader with Company M, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Lieutenant Howard was participating in a reconnaissance in force operation in the vicinity of Cu Chi when his tank, the lead vehicle in the column was suddenly struck by several rounds of enemy antitank fire. The enemy fire had also struck another tank seriously wounding the platoon sergeant and crew members. Reacting instantly, Lieutenant Howard maneuvered his vehicle to the flank of the wounded sergeant’s vehicle skillfully directing a heavy suppressive fire to permit the prompt evacuation of the wounded man. Assured of his comrade’s safety Lieutenant Howard continued the assault of the enemy positions. When he received word that the company commander had been mortally wounded Lieutenant Howard unhesitantly assumed command of the company and expertly led the assault on the Viet Cong stronghold. From his fully exposed position he led the assault elements through the enemy perimeter firing his main gun at enemy antitank positions enabling the remainder of the company to completely rout the insurgent force. His staunch courage, devotion to duty and outstanding leadership were instrumental in the overwhelming defeat of the enemy. First Lieutenant Howard’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
