The President of the United States of America His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army. Authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Gustave J. Burandt (ASN: 0-422335), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, Germany, on 3 and 4 March 1945. Major Burandt, S-3 of the *** Tank Battalion, led an infantry-armored task force in eliminating enemy resistance at the approaches to the town of ****, then made a personal reconnaissance into the town. He then directed a night assault into f****, during the course of which he exposed himself to heavy enemy fire with utter disregard for personal safety, in order to direct assaults on various strong points. Major Burandt’s intrepidity, dynamic leadership, and skillful coordination of the units of the task force, resulted in the seizure of the town and huge stores of food, ammunition and other equipment, after killing fifty-three and capturing two hundred and seven enemy troops. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
