Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 1209 (March 28, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Specialist Fourth Class Claude E. Horton, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 10 October 1969 while serving as a crew chief with the 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while flying reconnaissance for Troop B, a friendly element came under intense hostile fire from a large enemy force firing from a well-fortified position. Learning that his ship would land through the dense fire in order to evacuate the wounded Specialist Horton climbed out into the skid of the aircraft to better direct the pilot into the tiny landing zone. As the helicopter touched ground, Specialist Horton jumped from the aircraft and began directing the loading of the injured personnel. In spite of the intense enemy fire Specialist Horton continued to expose himself while helping load the wounded. As the ship took off he jumped back upon the skid and began firing his machine gun at the enemy positions laying down a suppressive base of fire to protect his ship. His accurate fire accounted for the destruction of an enemy machine gun position and the evacuation of several wounded soldiers. Specialist Four Horton’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
