The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert V. Andring (ASN: 13013656), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action in the **** Sector, Normandy, France, on 31 July 1944. When the advance of his platoon was held up by withering fire from an enemy machine gun, Private Andring, a rifleman, crawled within eight feet of the enemy emplacement, threw a hand grenade into the enemy position, killing all members of the crew and silencing the machine gun. The gallant actions of Private Andring, his initiative and utter disregard for personal safety reflect the highest credit upon his character as a soldier and are in accord with the military traditions of the United States.
