The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class Amos L. Hissem, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force on 9 June 1969 while serving as driver of the troop commander’s vehicle, Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Specialist Hissem was engaged in a reconnaissance mission when he was rendered temporarily unconscious by a rocket propelled grenade which exploded against his vehicle during an attack. Refusing medical attention, Specialist Hissem turned his vehicle toward the enemy and climbed from the vehicle positioning himself behind the machine gun. He began firing into the well concealed enemy positions. Although flames engulfed his vehicle he continued to place suppressive fire until the enemy force was routed. Specialist Fourth Class Hisser’s bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
