The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert H. Ady (ASN: 17049483), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 35th Infantry Division, in action near ****, France, 14 September 1944. Sergeant Ady was seriously wounded by shell fragments during an enemy artillery barrage while moving his machine gun section forward in support of an attacking rifle company. Disregarding his personal condition, Sergeant Ady directed evacuation of his squad gunner who was also wounded during the barrage, picked up the tripod and led his squad forward. He selected an advantageous site, placed the machine gun in position, designated the primary and secondary targets, assigned another man as observer, and only then did he permit himself to be evacuated. The gallant actions of Sergeant Ady, and his dogged determination that his unit’s mission be given first consideration, served as an inspiration to other soldiers in the area, and reflect high credit upon his character as a soldier and upon the military service.
