The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Captain (Armor) John B. Poindexter, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an armed enemy on 25 March 1970 while serving as a Troop Commander with Troop A, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while the mortar section was firing defensive fire, a mortar round exploded in the tube killing the crew and wounding several others. Even though the mortar vehicle was burning and projectiles were exploding in and around the vehicle, Captain Poindexter attempted to remove the casualties not knowing they were already dead. He then attempted to extinguish the fire and although he was unsuccessful, he did reduce the intensity of the fire for a short time allowing others to escape. Captain Poindexter’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
