The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Armor) John R. Pearson (ASN: 0-5324107), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Pearson distinguished himself by valorous actions on 23 February 1967, while serving as the pilot of a UH-1D helicopter on a routine re-supply mission. Monitoring an urgent call for evacuation of 5 critically wounded infantrymen, Lieutenant Pearson flew at top speed to the scene. Upon arriving, is aircraft was met by incredibly dense fog that rose to a height of 700 feet above the ground. Lieutenant Pearson tried twice to penetrate the fog, but was forced to ascend, relying solely upon his instruments. Realizing the immediate need for evacuation of the casualties, Lieutenant Pearson flew to the edge of the fog bank, descended to treetop level, and courageously entered the dense fog. With virtually no forward visibility and only the barely discernible treetops to guide him, Lieutenant Pearson began a slow, intensive search of the area. After 15 minutes of careful searching, he located the men and quickly landed. In spite of the prohibitive conditions, Lieutenant Pearson took off as soon as the casualties were safely aboard. His rapid flight to medical aid subsequently saved several lives. First Lieutenant Pearson’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
