Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 5917 (July 22, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Hobert M. Parker (ASN: RA-18597546), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Platoon Sergeant Parker distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 12 February 1968, while serving with Troop I, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, on a sweeping mission in conjunction with elements of the 1st Infantry Division in the Republic of Vietnam. At the onslaught of the enemy attack, Sergeant Parker maneuvered his vehicle to a flank position and from there effectively fired against the enemy. When his vehicle was disabled by a rocket explosion, Sergeant Parker assaulted the insurgent’s bunker on foot. Although intense enemy fire was being directed at him as he charged the position, Sergeant Parker succeeded in destroying the Viet Cong fortification. Through his courageous actions, many friendly lives and much equipment were saved. Sergeant Parker’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
