The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Edward W. Papin, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 6 September 1969 while serving as a co-pilot with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Warrant Officer Papin was co-piloting the squadron command and control ship in support of ground elements when he received and urgent evacuation call. As the ship approached the area, Warrant Officer Papin helped to direct the pilot down through the intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. By using evasive maneuvers the ship was able to make a successful landing. Warrant Officer Papin helped load the wounded on board and then helped to direct the ship out of the dangerous landing zone. With his direction the ship made two more trips and then he coordinated artillery strikes on the large enemy force. Warrant Officer Papin’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
