The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ronald K. Noble (ASN: 0-5019978), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, as evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, While serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Noble distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 29 April 1967, while serving as a rotary wing aviator performing aerial reconnaissance over an alleged Viet Cong ruled village as friendly elements converged upon the small town. As the friendly forces moved in from the north and east, Lieutenant Noble observed a large group of insurgents rapidly fleeing the village on the west side. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Noble engaged the hostile force. Avoiding their fire, Lieutenant Noble flew low over the area, firing accurate bursts on the insurgents. With the arrival of the gunships, Lieutenant Noble ascended to 1,000 feet in order to allow his passenger, the Regimental Commander, to view the entire actions. At that moment, Lieutenant Noble observed a Viet Cong who had left an area of rubber trees and darted beneath a bridge. Without regard for personal safety, Lieutenant Noble descended and directed his door gunners to engage the concealed enemy soldier. Returning to the scene of the battle after restocking his ammunition supply, Lieutenant Noble spotted eight Viet Cong making their way down a jungle trail. Fully realizing the danger of the situation, Lieutenant Noble pursued the fleeing enemy, eliminating several of the insurgents in the ensuing action. Lieutenant Noble’s extreme courage and outstanding flying ability were an inspiration to all and contributed significantly to the rout of the enemy force. First Lieutenant Noble’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
