The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Major Daniel J. Mulcahey (ASN: RA-11076683), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 5 September 1968 while serving with Headquarters, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date in the vicinity of Chany Luu, Sergeant Major Mulcahey was accompanying the regimental commander in a command and control helicopter when he suddenly observed a number of North Vietnamese Army soldiers attempting to penetrate blocking positions established by friendly forces. Immediately he began direction the fire of the helicopter door gunners into the hostile positions while courageously exposing himself to the enemy’s bullets in order to observe the effect of the fire. Landing in the area through which the enemy forces were escaping, Sergeant Major Mulcahey dismounted with the door gunners and directed them to assume firing positions. Moments later, the aircraft received an intense volley of fire from the vicinity of a deep ravine in which the enemy forces were concealed. Sergeant Major Mulcahey, with total disregard for his own personal safety, continually exposed himself to the enemy fire in order to direct suppressive fire upon the well-entrenched enemy, effectively shielding the vulnerable aircraft from the hostile fire and containing the enemy forces until friendly reinforcements arrived. Sergeant Major Mulcahey’s unwavering devotion to duty, leadership ability and disregard of personal safety while under hostile fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
