The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant George A. Mueller (ASN: RA-11313389), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 12 September 1968 while serving as platoon sergeant with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Troop E was moving to relieve a company of the 1st Infantry Division which was pinned down by an estimated enemy battalion. The move was made through 2000 meters of enemy infested territory through which constant contact with enemy forces was maintained. Upon arriving at the location of the beleaguered infantry company, a fierce firefight ensued in which Troop E forced the North Vietnamese Army elements to withdraw, but sporadic sniper, small arms and antitank rocket fire continued throughout the night. In order to evacuate several critically wounded American infantryman, Sergeant Mueller totally disregarded his personal safety in the face of the highly accurate enemy sniper fire, dismounted his assault vehicle and began clearing a landing zone to allow helicopters to evacuate wounded personnel. During the clearing operation, Sergeant Mueller was struck by a falling tree, seriously injuring him. Despite his serious injuries, he refused medical attention and continued to work, never once complaining of his own pains. As a result of his determined actions, the lives of several American soldiers were saved and a critical resupply mission was completed. Platoon Sergeant Mueller’s unwavering devotion to duty, disregard of personal safety and deep concern for the lives of his comrades were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
