The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) William T. Moorer (ASN: 0-5335140), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Moorer distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 28 March 1968, while serving as a Tank Platoon Leader attached to Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, on a reconnaissance in force operation near Xom Bao Than, Vietnam. When the friendly force came in contact with a well-entrenched Viet Cong Battalion, Lieutenant Moorer directed his tank to the center of the fierce firefight and began providing effective suppressive fire. Despite continuous exposure to the hail of fire directed primarily at his vehicle, Lieutenant Moorer moved to within 10 meters of Viet Cong bunkers and quickly achieved fire superiority over the enemy. When another tank’s ammunition became expended, Lieutenant Moorer gallantly left the safety of his vehicle and dashed through the torrent of fire to re-supply the vehicle. After delivering the ammunition, Lieutenant Moorer valiantly led another assault on the hostile positions and was instrumental in the death of numerous enemy soldiers. First Lieutenant Moorer’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a numerically superior Viet Cong force as in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
