The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Earl F. Moore, Jr. (ASN: 0-5240792), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 27 November 1968 while serving as a platoon leader of the Aero Rifle Platoon of the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date his platoon was called upon to reinforce elements of the 1st Infantry Division which had come into close contact with an enemy force of unknown size, resulting in heavy friendly casualties. Disregarding personal safety, Captain Moore led his flight intro the contact area without damage to any of the aircraft. Upon arriving at an unsecured landing zone, Captain Moore was informed of a critically wounded soldier. Reacting immediately, he maneuvered his aircraft into the area to evacuate the wounded man, exposing himself to enemy fire. He completed his mission by quickly and safely extracting the injured soldier to an evacuation hospital in time to save his life. Captain Moore’s professional competence contributed measurably to the successful reinforcement of the friendly unit by courageously leading the Aero Rifle Platoon into the firefight area and the saving of the life of a critically wounded soldier. His performance during a night blackout airmobile assault in an unsecured landing zone was an inspiration to those who served with him. Captain Moore’s outstanding leadership and personal bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
