Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 2274 (September 7, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Infantry) Alan A. Moore, III, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty on 11 May 1969 while serving as a helicopter pilot with the 398th Transportation Detachment, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date he received a request to assist armored elements of the regiment’s 2d Squadron engaged with an enemy force. Upon reaching the contact area, he landed and picked up a number of friendly casualties. During the fierce firefight he made several more trips to evacuate wounded troops and captured enemy soldiers to the regiment’s base camp. While Captain Moore was monitoring the enemy movements, his helicopter came under intense fire from a hostile automatic weapons emplacement. As he flew back around to mark the position, his aircraft was hit by a hail of automatic weapons fire from four enemy positions. Realizing that his co-pilot was wounded and the helicopter was heavily damaged, he maneuvered the aircraft out of the danger area and to his base of operations. Captain Moore’s outstanding courage, determination and concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
