Headquarters, II Field Force Vietnam, General Orders No. 870 (March 4, 1970)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Patrick E. Money, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 18 March 1969 while serving as a platoon leader with Troop L, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date Troop L was on a reconnaissance mission when it suddenly came under intense small arms, automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenade fire. Lieutenant Money effectively directed his men against the well-entrenched North Vietnamese Army force, neutralizing several bunker complexes. While directing his men he was seriously wounded, but continued to reorganize his platoon and evacuate the other wounded soldiers. He then pressed the attack against the numerically superior enemy force, constantly exposing himself to hostile fire. As the heavily armed force fought back, Lieutenant Money led a small dismounted patrol through the enemy base camp, engaging bunker after bunker with antitank weapons. First Lieutenant Money’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
