The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Ronald C. Mixon (ASN: RA-19604504), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 28 January 1968 while serving as an armored cavalry assault vehicle commander with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date a logistical convoy returning to the 1st Squadron larger position in the Hobo Woods was passing through a heavily-mined area when five of the armored assault vehicles detonated antitank mines. Troop C was immediately called in as a reaction force. Suddenly the reaction vehicle which Sergeant Mixon was commanding exploded an antitank mine, throwing him into the air and back down on his vehicle. An instant after the explosion, an unknown-size enemy force directed an intense volley of small arms and automatic weapons fire upon the friendly force. Regaining consciousness, Sergeant Mixon observed that his vehicle had erupted into flames and was in danger of being completely destroyed. Reacting instantly, Sergeant Mixon crawled across his vehicle, activated the fire extinguisher and moved the unconscious driver and troop commander to safety. He next aided stunned right gunner in dismounting the potentially explosive vehicle. After he had insured the safety of the crewmembers, he dashed to a nearby vehicle and retrieved a fire extinguisher and disregarded the intense hostile fire to dash back to his own vehicle and put out the fire. Despite his dazed and shaken condition, Sergeant Mixon refused medical treatment until the enemy force had been defeated. Sergeant Mixon’s unwavering devotion to duty, deep concern for the welfare of his comrades and disregard for his personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
