The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) Preston V. Miller, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer One Miller distinguished himself while piloting a helicopter near the Boi Loi Woods. Warrant Officer Miller made ten trips into the embattled area, delivering weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies as well as evacuating wounded personnel. Later on, he made low level passes over the enemy positions, marking them with smoke grenades in order for helicopter gunships to spot and fire upon. Then, Mister Miller flew the squadron commander over the contact area so that he could direct artillery fire and troop movements. Warrant Officer One Miller’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
