The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) John M. Miller (ASN: OF-107282), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in close combat with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Miller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 July 1967, while serving as the platoon leader of Troop I, 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. On this date Lieutenant Miller was participating in an armed road march to establish forward support base to be utilized during Operation Emporia. In command of the lead vehicle, Lieutenant Miller’s unit was suddenly engaged by two battalions of main force Viet Cong armed with rockets, recoilless rifles, and automatic and semi-automatic weapons. Reacting instantly, Lieutenant Miller immediately directed the members of his crew in their return of lethal volley of highly accurate suppressive fire. Using the 90 millimeter main gun, Lieutenant Miller personally destroyed several insurgent automatic weapons positions as well as a number of anti-tank fortifications. Just as he was about to put in a call for more ammunition. Lieutenant Millers tank was struck by several rounds of rocket fire, seriously wounding several of his crew. Without hesitation, Lieutenant Miller evacuated his men from the disabled tank and, assured of their safety, went to another tank and carried more ammunition for his vehicle. With his new supply of ammunition, Lieutenant Miller then directed a renewed assault into the Viet Cong ranks, driving them into the surrounding treeline. First Lieutenant Miller’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
