The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant William L. McGuire, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving an armed force on 21 January 1970 while serving as a platoon sergeant with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date while conducting operations in the dense jungle near the Cambodian border, the troop came under intense rocket propelled grenade, mortar, recoilless rifle and automatic weapons fire from an estimated battalion of North Vietnamese soldiers. Sergeant McGuire immediately commenced fire with his automatic weapons while assaulting the enemy positions. Despite his serious wounds he incurred from exploding enemy rounds, he continued to remain at his post, bringing accurate suppressive fire upon the enemy positions and inflicting great numbers of casualties. Sergeant McGuire’s determination was such that he had to be forcibly removed from his vehicle to receive medical attention. Platoon Sergeant McGuire’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
