Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam, General Orders No. 2264-99 (June 29, 1971)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain (Armor) Floyd D. McGough, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty, while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain McGough distinguished himself while flying the Command and Control helicopter in the Boi Loi Woods. An element of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment had engaged a large hostile force, sustaining numerous casualties. Amid intense enemy fire, Captain McGough landed his aircraft, on ten different occasions, to evacuate the wounded soldiers. Ignoring heavy enemy flak, he flew his helicopter at low altitude in order to locate the concealed enemy bunkers. Moments later, Captain McGough landed his airship directly behind the dismounted assault force so that the squadron commander could personally direct the troops on the ground. Captain McGough’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
