The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Roy McCormick (ASN: RA-14671260), United States Army, for gallantry actions while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 29 August 1968 while serving as an armored assault vehicle commander with Troop E, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date in the vicinity of Loc Ninh, Troop E was conducting a reconnaissance in force mission when it suddenly came under an intense volley of enemy small arms, automatic weapons and antitank rocket fire from well entrenched elements of two North Vietnamese Army regiments. Sergeant McCormick observing that the dense vegetation prevented the armored cavalry assault vehicles from making an assault on the hostile positions, dismounted his vehicle and, with a number of his men, made a ground assault against the entrenched enemy positions. A burst of small arms fire from a concealed enemy bunker struck Sergeant McCormick in the back, severely wounding him. Realizing that the enemy position presented a serious threat, Sergeant McCormick, completely disregarding his serious wounds, continued to lead the attack on the hostile position until it was destroyed. Staff Sergeant McCormick’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
