The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) George M. Madison, United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty on 12 August 1970 while serving as an aircraft commander with Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Warrant Officer Madison had been summoned to medically evacuate members of the Aero Rifle Platoon, and as he arrived over the area of contact, he realized that the only route of approach was over the enemy positions. With complete disregard for his own safety, he maneuvered his craft through the intense enemy antiaircraft fire. Once he had landed, Warrant Officer Madison’s craft began to receive enemy automatic weapons fire, but he remained on the ground until all the wounded personnel had been placed on board. He then expertly extracted his helicopter from the area with no damage or injury to his helicopter or crew, despite the constant hail of enemy fire directed at them. Warrant Officer Madison’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit the United States Army.
